Summer events 2010
As usual, July & August are months where Kendo, Iaido & Jodo practice in our federation is less active but are the occasion for many of us to attend seminars organized abroad.

The end of August is the start of the new season. This year we had the Iaido summer seminar, well-known as the “koryu” seminar in Louvain-La-Neuve and the Kendo Tamiza Cup in Bornem organized by the Tamiza Kendo Kai. Both events were successful and have seen good results for the examinations which were liked to these events.
Also Jodo was not forgotten with the organization of the 9th European Jodo Championships. A separate report can be found on this page. Complete results are available at www.ejc2010.be

EJC 2010 BRUSSELS (03-05/09/10)

Stevenage, UK First iaido & jodo referee seminar on 17 & 18/05/2010
Seminar led by Ishido sensei, 8 dan hanshi iaido,8dan kyoshi jodo,
& Yoshimura sensei ,8dan kyoshi iaido,8dan kyoshi jodo.
Unfortunaly, the airports in Europe were closed on that weekend. Is was simple luck that the sensei arrived in England on Wednesday. But of the more than 100 inscriptions, there were only 62 participants at the seminar. Among them were 13 Belgians, who came by car & boat. No airplane problems for us!
There was a preliminary seminar on Friday (from 15.00h until 21.00h) were everybody was watched by the sensei . We received many tips and remarks as the sensei passed by and eveybody get his part of remarks after being observed by the teachers.
On Saturday the real referee seminar started at 10.00h until 17.00h. After a lot of explanations by the sensei, wich was translated by Mr Andy Watson (with sometimes a little help of our tireless Yuki Kanto, who seems to be a translator wherever she goes). After that, participants were divided into three groups by grades. In each group participants were players and referees. This way, everybody could experience both sides of the tables. Which was very, very constructive. In the afternoon, the same was done with the jodo participants, while the iaido participants continued on the other side of the sporting hall.
On Sunday, the three groups started the same way, again from 10.00h until 17.00h. Buth this time, ishido sensei stopped several times the matches, to give his remarks. And to question the participants who would give the victory to whom, and why exactly.
We were confronted with a lot of deliberate and undeliberate mistakes, to experience difficult problems into our refereeing. Again, in the afternoon, the same happened in the jodo group, where everybody could experience the complexity of refereeing.
At 17.00h the sensei stopped this seminar, hoping that everybody could….return at home.As the sensei themselves had to stay until Saturday 22/05/2010 before they had places on a plane to Japan. We were all gratefull for the remarks and guidance received, and still found the energy to make a picture of the Belgian people who stayed until the end, together with the sensei.
Hopefully we see each other again next year, on a new european iaido & jodo referee seminar.
Thanks to our Belgian friends who joined this seminar and passed this already to the Belgian referees the weekend after…).

23th EKC Debrecen – Hungary – report.
With our delegation leader, coach and referee already in Hungary, the rest of the Belgian team left for the 23rd European Kendo Championship in Debrecen, early in the morning on the 8th of April. At the airport we were honoured to be guided to the check-in by Kurogi-san, who arranged our tickets with Fuji-Travel.
After a short flight of only two hours, a bus-trip to Hungary’s second city Debrecen awaited, straight trough the immense plane of Hungary’s countryside. Nobody expected it to be so wide and flat, but after almost 4 hours of this we made it to our hotel.
At walking distance from the Fönix-Hall, where the tournament was held, our accommodation there was welcoming after such a journey and before the start of the competition. The spirit of the team was immediately revived with a good training, while the officials attended the meetings to arrange the final practical aspects of the event.
On Friday the games began with the Junior’s team and individual competition in the morning and the Ladies’ teams fighting in the afternoon. All of our members showed good spirit and the result of thorough Kihon-practise, so pools were passed and some really nice points were scored. Off course, at a European championship the opposition is also eager to win and prevented us from making it to the finals.
On the second day the Men’s team competition was held with the pools in the morning and the actual tournament in the afternoon. Second match against Hungary was difficult, but our men did a good job making the Hungarian team show their best kendo. However, because of the first team match against Austria, that proved to be stronger than expected, we had to win from Hungary to make it through the pool, something most of us didn’t think to be necessary.
The last day of the tournament only two individual categories were left to be held. So our women gave their best in the morning, which led to a fighting spirit award for Rachel Buysse and some demonstration of nice and correct Belgian kendo.
In the afternoon our men did a similar effort and showed the spectators a couple of memorable matches. Because of difficult opponents in the pools some of them looked like a final instead of a pool match. Peter D’Hont was also awarded with a fighting spirit and everyone could feel the progress made since last year.
Reflecting upon the experience in Hungary we could say there is still a lot of work to be done training physically, but that alone didn’t prove to be enough. There is a big mental aspect about Kendo which is to be understood before being able to win, and perhaps new training methods will lead us to do just this in the near future. |

Our former President, Francis Goosens, passed away on Wednesday Feb 17th at the age of 79.

He was one of the earlier Kenshi in the country when starting kendo in the early 60’s together with an active Judo career.
Mister Goosens spend his active life in Africa as an engineer and continued his daily practice in the Republic of Congo with the local people but also with the son of Kasahara sensei, former FIK secretary and the local Japanese community.
When he retired, he came back to his home country Belgium and served for several years as President of our federation. He got the rank in kendo of 6th dan in 2002 and became Renshi the following year.
He had to stop his active weekly practice at the end of 2009 due to cancer and survived the death of his wife only a few days.

Belgian Kendo « Kyu » Championships 2008
On November 15th, about 170 persons took part in the 2008 edition of the annual tournament organized for beginners in Kendo. This year, the “Belgian Kendo Renmei” (French speaking part’s federation) took the organization. Even if the day started with 1 minute silence in respect towards Mark De Zeine (27), member of Kenseikan suddenly past away one week before this tournament.
Everything went smoothly to the finals in all categories. This year, we saw also many new referees taking part in the event. The new one’s and of course the more experienced together with the people at the tables did a very nice job which makes everybody happy.
Those who have some interesting pictures are invited to send their link to these or the pictures themselves to the federation.

European Kendo Championships 2008 – Helsinki Finland.
The last rush towards the EKC started in Belgium with a week seminar conducted by the national kendo coach, Hirakawa sensei.
About 30 persons every day joined the seminar which made the teaching of sensei easy to follow for those who listen carefully. A member of the Slovenian Kendo Federation attended this seminar. Janez Tarman was the first Slovenian member to take part in an EKC since the start of this federation. A strong band between their group and our federation has grown since the first contacts during a Hirakawa sensei’s seminar in Denmark some years ago.
On Wednesday March 19th, the delegation arrived in Finland. The next day, our officials joined the EKF General Assembly and Manager Meeting when the team members had some sightseeing moments and last practice before the competition. During the EKF meeting, our members, Alain Ducarme and Raf Bernaers were re-elected as President and secretary of the Board of Officers of EKF. Finally, Jean Claude Wolfs, referee at the EKC, arrived in the evening which made the Belgian delegation complete.
Friday 21st was for our junior members and Ladies team competitors the first day of competition,. The next day started with the Ladies individual and continued by the Team competition. The final day was for the Male individual competition. Beside the very good atmosphere in the group, we had also the chance to show the actual Belgian level in Kendo. Some of our members received some official awards but others also received some very good comments for their engagement in the competition.

ISHIDO Sensei specially flew over from Japan for this occasion to lead the seminar and tournament , he was also assisted by several high ranking Europeans.
Due to the enormous national and international interest it looked like a mini European Championship.
An important Belgian delegation could not be no part of it.
They performed magnificent and gained no less than 7 medals with Jodo and 5 medals with Iaido..

Kitamoto 2007
Foto's (Peter): http://users.belgacom.net/gc371469/
Report (Christophe):
It's not easy to describe the Kitamoto-seminar in just a few words (given that I understood anything of it), but here's a try:
At first I should point out that it was really impressive to have this many top-ranking sensei together in one seminar. We were thaught
by: Nariaki SATO, hanshi 8 dan,
Takeshi MASAGO, hanshi 8 dan, Osamu ASANO hansi 8 dan, Tadao TODA kyoshi 8 dan, Eiji SUENO kyoshi 8 dan.
Then there were many 6th & 7th dan acting as staff & motodachi:
Kurose sensei, Inoue sensei, Shioiri sensei, etc.
I should also mention Kendo World's Alex BENETT and Michael KOMOTO who, in spite of their hard job as translators (a good idea for any seminar - quite a difference), were cheering up the whole seminar with their good mood and sense of humor.
The daily schedule for 7 days:
6.00: wake up
6.30 - 7.30: stretching & suburi
8.00: breakfast
9.00 - 10.20: kata
10.30 - 11.30: kihon
12.00: lunch
14.00-16.00: shimpan seminar
16.10-17.30: mawari keiko/ kakari keiko/ keiko with sensei.
18.00: dinner
20.00: bogu repair
On a whole, everything had to be quite disciplined. The little spare time we had was spent on repair, making notes and sleeping (and a little bit of drinking). Also, every room was given daily tasks such as cleaning dojo, toilets, dining room, etc... While at first this reminded me a bit of boy-scouts, I think this was important in establishing a feeling of "togetherness" among the participants.
There were 56 participants, the average level being sandan.
It might have been a bit frustrating to some of the higher ranked participants, but the main purpose of the seminar was not so much getting proficiency in keiko or shiai. It might be better to spend some time in a famous dojo for that. Although the keiko with the sensei was tremendous, and I know that lot of Japanese never get to practice with these sensei, keiko was limited to about an hour a day.
Most of the attention went to establishing a correct and rational basis (rationality being the key word): correct reigi, the finer points of kata and fundamental kihon. Shimpan lessons were severe and difficult. There was a big emphasis on the definition of yuko-datotsu and the understanding of the shiai-regulations (and the difference of these compared to "regular" sports).
I feel that the seminar was mostly set on giving the the participants an understanding of what kendo really is and why things in kendo are the way they are. To me this showed that there are plenty of things much more important than only win/loss in shiai: having a thorough understanding of the tradition of kendo; always striving for the highest quality of kendo, even on your own personal level; making friendships through kendo; trying to pass on this knowledge so that you contribute to the growth of kendo outside of Japan.
Although I tend to be highly critical towards some of the pseudo religious/philosophical views that are sometimes spread out on kendo or budo in general, I think that, understood in this way, kendo can truly be a way of life. This is what attending the Kitamoto seminar meant to me.

ABKF Summer Seminar 2007
For the 6th time in a row the Iaido «Koryu » seminar was a great success. After the “private” organization at the beginning the seminar became an integral part of the summer seminar offered by the Belgian Federation to its members. For the first time it was possible to partake in examinations from 1st dan to to 5th dan. (Picture’s coming soon)
The Kendo seminar under supervision of Hirakawa sensei also took in the “Tamiza Cup” organized by the dojo Tamiza Kendo Kai. Examinations were also organized but it most certainly was the referee seminar that was the most appreciative… The document used during the seminar can be downloaded here.

European Kendo Championships 2007
Lissabon Portugal
The 21ste European Championships were held in Lisbon from 27 until 29 April. Our country was represented by a delegation of 19 persons consisting of 3 juniors, 5 ladies, 6 men and a cadre including a referee. The tournament was preceded by the general assembly of the European Kendo Federation (EKF) which on this occasion could welcome 4 new members: Montenegro, Macedonia, Mozambique & Lithuania. Also an important point of this meeting was the according of the new rules for the Kendo examinations. Besides the altering of the amount of members in an exam committee the waiting period of person of 60 years and older is reduced by half. New is also the possibility for candidates who fail for the Kata or written exam to receive a document which allows them to enter a next examination only for the failed parts.
For the first time in history the tournament was held on 4 shiajo which resulted in a certain freshness of the participants because less time was spent in the sports hall.
Friday, first tournament day, teams juniors and ladies and also juniors individual.
Our juniors where out of the tournament quickly but where certainly not bad. It gave them the insight in their current state, the method of training and mostly the work yet to be done. The ladies team did a much better job but where nevertheless not capable to reach the quarter finales. Big surprise was the fighting spirit award for Lisa Van Laecken....
Saturday, second tournament day, Men's teams and ladies individual.
Since 2 years the team has been replaced for at least 90% and is troubled to better their predecessors; however they show a high potential. The atmosphere and coherence of the group is good and they can face coming tournaments unflinchingly. Again their was the surprise of Lisa Van Laecken. Not just happy with here medal of the previous day she won from the last years champion in the half finals, which she didn't know at the time, however the opponent in the final proved too strong. but yet again a place on the podium for Belgium on this second day.
Sunday, third day, Men's individual.
From the 6 subscribed players only 5 took part. The team captain decided not to participate on the advise of the cadre. Some days before the tournament he was hurt and after partaking his role in the team, it was thought wiser not to worsen the injury. Our 5 participants had a lot to do during the preliminaries and where certainly not bad. Special recommendation for Stefaan Van Boven who managed to endure several rounds and also for the reserve of the team. Philippe Hessens, who showed, in his match with the French J.N. Heurtevin, that kihon practice is a sure score at shiai....
The tournament was concluded by a “Sayonara Party" at the end of the day. Everybody decided to do it again in March 2008 in the far North, Helsinki...
